In the past, handmade things were associated with clumsy brooches made of salt dough and vases covered with wool (made in elementary school and handed out on the occasion of Grandma's Day). Now handmade is not only a fashion that keeps gaining new fans, but also a reasonable choice. At a time when you are flooded with cheap, mass production (which has little to do with durability), things from manufactories run by enthusiasts are something worth investing in.
